The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos is a leading research group in the field of prevention and epidemiology of diabetes in Spain. Its personnel have been involved in various landmark projects on public health aspects of diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, in Spain and in many other countries. In the last years, the group has developed an interest in gestational diabetes, establishing a close collaboration with the Department of Gynaecology of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos
The group has focused on the clinical care of patients with diabetes mellitus, having collaborated in leading multicenter studies such as the Diabetes Nutrition and Complications Trial and, more recently in the di@betes.es study. Within the area of gestational diabetes, they have joined with obstetricians and neonatologists creating an integral care program to follow-up pregnant woman. We also worked in the last two decades in the field of epidemiology of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular risk and, more recently analyzing hormonal and molecular mechanisms associated with obesity and diabetes (in particular diabetes remission by bariatric, or, more appropriately, “metabolic” surgery). Part of its research trajectory is linked to Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration, which has generated several publications of high impact.
