MOST RELEVAnT RESULTS
• Discovery that lipin-2, an enzyme of triglyceride and phospholipid metabolism, plays a key role in regulating
interleukin-1ß production in macrophages through its effects on NLRP3 inflammasome assembly. These findings provide a molecular explanation for Majeed Syndrome, an autoinflammatory disease caused by inactivating mutations of the gene encoding for lipin-2.
• Description of the presence of an unusual isomer of palmitoleic acid, cis-7-hexadecenoic acid, in human peripheral blood monocytes. This fatty acid shows a strong anti-inflammatory character in vitro and in vivo, and its levels appear to be regulated by the activation state of the cells, which could be useful as a biomarker of ‘foamy monocyes’ for the early detection of cardiovascular disease.
