Highlights
RESULTS
• The incretin GLP-1 effectively protects ß-cells from oxidative stress by improving their antioxidant capacity through the increased enzymatic activity of glutathione-peroxidase and -reductase via PKA- dependent activation of ERK and nrf2 nuclear translocation.
• The blockage of autophagic activity in the endocrine pancreas seems to be required during postnatal remodeling in order to ensure the correct ß-cell turnover by apoptosis. This blockage might be associated to disappearance of islet IgF-2 expression since sustained IgF-2 stimulation of InS-1E cells inhibits mTORC1 activity and increases autophagy flux.
• Coffee silverskin extract improves glucose-stimulated insulin secretion and protects against streptozotocin-induced damage in pancreatic ß-cells.
